Our Story & History

Markaz Ul Islam was founded in 1984 by Muslim families who recognized the need for an organized place of worship and community gathering in Fort McMurray. In its early years, the community relied on shared spaces and volunteer e orts to maintain religious life.

In 1989, the Downtown Mosque was established at 9904 Gordon Avenue, providing a permanent spiritual home and serving as the center of community life for many years.

about

As Fort McMurray grew and the Muslim population expanded, the need for a larger and more comprehensive facility became clear. In 2018, the Uptown facility opened at 109 Abraham Place, designed not only as a mosque but as a full community centre with classrooms, meeting spaces, and areas for youth, family, and wellness programs.

Over four decades, Markaz Ul Islam has evolved into a trusted institution focused on faith, service, education, mental health awareness, and community well-being.
