New Fort McMurray Islamic Centre Project

Fort McMurray Islamic Centre:

The economical growth in Ft McMurray has attracted many Muslims to this Northern city. The Muslim population has increased from 250 people in early 1990′s to over 10,000 people in 2012.

The current Masjid which was built in 1989 to accommodate a maximum of 250 worshippers can no longer accommodate our needs. Friday, Eid and Taraweeh prayers cannot be performed in the Masjid due to its limited space. Instead, the community is continuously struggling to rent big halls such as school gyms, hotels and recreation centers to perform these prayers. Many times, halls are not available and we end up praying outdoors or arranging three successive Friday prayers at the current Masjid.

Also, the Islamic school which started in 2004 with 23 students KG to grade 1 has now reached its maximum capacity of 292 students with over 100 students on the waiting list due to space limitation.

Muslim Community of Fort McMurray has grown many folds over the past 10-12 years and our Masjid is not capable of handling many of our regular prayers and events.Masjid can only accommodate approximately 250 people.

We are often packed at Maghrib and Isha prayers. This discourages many people to come to Masjid as they can’t find a spot.

Land Purchase for the new center:

Realizing these challenges, our community has joined a consortium of Four non-profitable organizations (MARKAZ-UL-ISLAM, St. John Church, McMurray Gospel Assembly and Municipality of Wood Buffalo) in 2007 to acquire a land to build a new enter to accommodate the need of Fort McMurray Muslim population.
With Allah’s blessing we were able to purchase 3.853 ha (9.52 acres) of land as indicated on Lot 2 of the tentative site plan drawing to build our new Islamic center. It is 264m long and 144m wide. Total cost of MARKAZ land developedwas $5 Million fully donated by the local Muslim community.
